From Survival to Thriving: Prevention, Wellness, and Community Health

Black history reminds us of resilience.

Of survival.

Of strength.

But what if the next chapter of our history isn’t just about surviving?

What if it’s about caring for ourselves intentionally?

Not just when something goes wrong.

Not just when there’s a diagnosis.

Not just when it’s urgent.

But consistently. Proactively. Collectively.

So what would caring for ourselves actually look like?

It Would Look Like Prevention Being Normal

Caring for us would mean annual checkups are routine… not reactionary.

It would look like:

  • Scheduling recommended screenings before there’s fear (mammograms, prostate exams, colon screenings)

  • Asking about family health history

  • Getting blood work done regularly

  • Following up when something feels “off”

We would stop waiting for crisis.

Because early detection changes outcomes.

Education changes outcomes.

Advocacy changes outcomes.

Prevention would become part of our culture, not an afterthought.

It Would Look Like Food That Heals, Not Just Fills

Caring for us would mean understanding that what we eat matters.

Not perfection. But awareness.

It would look like:

  • Teaching our children about inflammation

  • Choosing more whole foods

  • Drinking more water

  • Understanding that high blood pressure and diabetes are not just “family traits” and that they’re often influenced by our lifestyle.

Food is information for our bodies.

And when we understand that, we begin to shift generational patterns.

It Would Look Like Emotional & Mental Support

Caring for us would mean:

  • Therapy is not taboo

  • Caregivers are supported too

  • Stress is taken seriously

  • Saying “I’m not okay” is allowed

Chronic stress impacts our immune system.

It affects blood pressure.

It affects hormones.

Healing isn’t only physical.

It’s emotional.

It’s spiritual.

It’s communal.

It Would Look Like Representation & Trust in Healthcare

History shows us why trust was broken.

But caring for us now means rebuilding it.

It means:

  • Asking questions

  • Seeking second opinions

  • Supporting providers who understand our lived experiences

  • Encouraging the next generation to enter healthcare

Trust improves communication.

Communication improves care.

Care improves outcomes.

It Would Look Like Community Showing Up

Caring for us would look like:

  • Driving someone to treatment

  • Reminding a friend about their appointment

  • Sharing EBLUXE CARES prevention health education and resources

  • Supporting programs that uplift confidence and whole-person wellness during treatment.

It would look like mentoring someone newly diagnosed.

It would look like providing fresh juice during chemotherapy.

It would look like restoring confidence through a custom wig.

It would look like our EBLUXE CARES community in action.

If you have a story to share, we invite you to participate in Connected Journeys — where lived experiences become powerful lessons for others.

If you’re navigating diagnosis, caregiving, or simply need space to process, join us for Healing Conversations — a safe and compassionate place for support.

If you believe prevention and whole-person wellness matter, attend an upcoming event, volunteer, partner with us, or help us expand access to education and care. https://www.ebluxecares.org/volunteer

When one of us is informed, we all rise.

When one of us is supported, we all heal.

When one of us chooses prevention, we all move forward.

Caring for us is not passive.

It is participatory.

Why EBLUXE CARES Exists

EBLUXE CARES was founded from a deeply personal place but it was built for the whole community.

Yes, we support individuals navigating cancer.

But we are not only focused on people in treatment.

We are focused on the whole person.

The person who wants to reduce their risk.

The person who wants to understand their body before there is a crisis.

The family trying to break generational health patterns.

The caregiver who needs support.

Our mission is to increase awareness, emphasize early detection and prevention, and bridge the gap between healthcare access and knowledge, especially in underserved communities.

We believe prevention education is powerful.

Because the goal is not just to respond to cancer.

The goal is to reduce risk.

To improve lifestyle habits.

To educate before diagnosis.

To protect future generations.

Caring for us means seeing the full picture, physical health, nutrition, mental wellness, and community support.

That is the heart of EBLUXE CARES.

The Truth

Our ancestors fought to get in the door. We fight to make sure what’s behind that door is equal.

They were able to survive without the access we have today. So let’s use the tools we have to make a better tomorrow for the next generation.

Caring for ourselves mean we stop normalizing suffering.

We stop accepting “that’s just how it is.”

We stop waiting, and we start protecting our bodies, our families, and our future….intentionally.

Because our health is not just personal, it’s our legacy.

Reflection

What is one appointment, habit, or conversation you’ve been putting off that could protect your future?

Small steps create generational change. Let’s change them together

With Love,

EBLUXE CARES
