Prostate Cancer Awareness: What Every Man (and Family) Should Know

Prostate Awareness Facts
Prostate Awareness Facts

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a time to talk openly about a disease that affects 1 in 8 men during their lifetime. At EBLUXE CARES, we believe awareness is power — and early action saves lives.

What Is Prostate Cancer?

The prostate is a small gland in men that helps make semen. Prostate cancer happens when the cells in this gland start to grow uncontrollably. Some cases grow slowly, while others can be aggressive.

Who Is Most at Risk?

• Age: Most common in men over 50.

• Race: African American men are at higher risk and often diagnosed at a younger age.

• Family History: Having a father, brother, or son with prostate cancer doubles the risk.

• Lifestyle: Diets high in processed foods, low activity, and obesity may increase risk.

Signs & Symptoms to Watch For

• Trouble urinating or weak urine flow

• Frequent urination, especially at night

• Blood in urine or semen

• Pain in the back, hips, or pelvis

Many men have no symptoms at all, which is why screenings are so important.

Screening Saves Lives

Two common screening tests are:

• PSA Blood Test: Measures prostate-specific antigen levels.

• Digital Rectal Exam (DRE): Checks for changes in the prostate.

Men should talk with their doctor about screenings by age 50 — or earlier (40–45) if at higher risk.

How to Lower Your Risk

While no cancer can be fully prevented, lifestyle choices can make a difference:

• Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains

• Limit red meat and processed foods

• Stay active with regular exercise

• Maintain a healthy weight

• Don’t skip yearly checkups and screenings

Prevention Through Action

You can help reduce your risk of cancer by making healthy choices and following recommended screening guidelines.
