Food Is Medicine: Could Your Grocery Cart Be One of Your Greatest Health Tools?

This Wellness Wednesday, we’re talking about something EBLUXE CARES has always believed: healing doesn’t only happen in a doctor’s office. For many of us, it also happens in our kitchens, at our dinner tables, and through the choices we make every day.
Earlier this week, research was presented at the American Diabetes Association’s Scientific Sessions found that adults living with type 2 diabetes experienced improvements in healthy eating, physical activity, and overall well-being when access to nutritious food was paired with education and support. The findings reinforce something that many communities have known for years, which is food matters, but support does also.
The food you put in your cart this week is one of the most powerful investments you can make in your health and we want to help you make those choices with confidence.
Food Is Medicine And Support Matters Too
We’ve heard it said for generations that food is medicine. And honestly, the more we learn, the more we believe it. At EBLUXE CARES, it’s not just a saying, it’s part of how we serve our community. We believe that whole-body health should be accessible to everyone, not a privilege. That means equipping people with practical wellness knowledge, connecting them to resources, and reminding them that small daily choices can have a lasting impact on their health.
When people have access to nourishing food and the support of a caring community, positive things happen. Energy improves. Healthy habits become easier to maintain. Chronic conditions become more manageable and Hope grows. We have seen tgis through research, in our communities and our own familes. God designed our bodies with an incredible ability to heal, repair, and restore. The foods we choose can help support those natural processes and contribute to our overall health and well-being.
Why We Talk About Food So Often
At EBLUXE CARES, food and wellness education have always been part of our mission. Through initiatives like Pressed With Love, What’s Food Got To Do With It?, and our Wellness Wednesday text community, we strive to help individuals and families make informed choices that support long-term health and well-being.
Pressed With Love was created from a simple belief: when people are navigating health challenges, practical support matters. Through this initiative, we provide fresh juices, encouragement, and wellness resources to individuals and families facing difficult seasons, helping remind them that they are not alone on their journey. Our passion for nutrition education is also deeply personal.
A few years a loved one was living with diabetes and relying on insulin as part of their treatment plan. As a family and organization, we began learning more about nutrition, healthy lifestyle habits, and the role daily choices can play in supporting overall health. Together, we focused on making small intentional changes and over time, his health improved significantly and he was eventually informed that he no longer needed insulin. While every person’s health journey is unique and individual results will vary, his experience became a powerful reminder that the choices we make every day does matter.
His story helped inspire many of the wellness conversations we continue to have through EBLUXE CARES today. It reinforced our belief that education is empowering, prevention matters, and people deserve access to information that helps them make informed decisions about their health. If you’d like to hear more about his journey, we’ve linked his interview below where he shares his experience in his own words.
The recent diabetes study reinforced this idea. Healthy food made a difference but healthy food paired with support made an even greater difference.
Ten Foods Worth Adding to Your Cart
You don’t need a specialty store or an expensive supplement to support your health. Some of the most nutrient-dense foods are available at your local grocery store.
Leafy Greens- Spinach, kale, and collard greens provide iron, folate, and vitamin K to support overall health.
Berries- Blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries are rich in antioxidants that help protect cells and support brain health.
Garlic- Known for its immune-supporting and heart-healthy properties, garlic is a simple ingredient that packs a powerful punch.
Turmeric- Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Pair it with black pepper to improve absorption.
Ginger- Fresh or ground ginger supports digestion and may help reduce inflammation.
Sweet Potatoes- Rich in beta-carotene, sweet potatoes support eye health, skin health, and immune function.
Beans and Legumes- Black beans, lentils, and pinto beans are affordable sources of fiber, protein, and essential nutrients.
Salmon or Sardines- These foods provide omega-3 fatty acids that support heart and brain health.
Oats- A heart-healthy whole grain that supports digestion, blood sugar balance, and lasting energy.
Citrus Fruits- Oranges, lemons, and grapefruit provide vitamin C and help the body absorb iron from plant-based foods.
It's Real food, Real nourishment and Real benefits.
Three Ways to Start This Week
You don’t need to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight. Small, consistent changes are often the most sustainable.
Add One New Food Choose one item from this list and add it to your next shopping trip.
Make One Simple Swap Replace one processed snack or sugary beverage with a whole-food alternative.
Share a Healthy Meal Prepare a simple meal with family or friends and use the opportunity to talk about health, wellness, and nourishment.
Remember, you don’t have to do everything at once. Just start with the next meal.
When Access Becomes a Barrier
One reason the recent research was so encouraging is that it recognized something many families already know which is healthy choices are easier when healthy options are accessible.
Not everyone has the same access to fresh, nutritious foods. Food deserts remain a reality in many communities, creating barriers that can make healthy eating more difficult.
That’s why awareness and advocacy matter.
EBT/SNAP benefits can be used at many farmers markets, and programs such as Market Match may help stretch food dollars further.
Community organizations and food banks often provide fresh produce and pantry staples to families in need. Imperial Church of Christ give away food to the community every 2nd and 4th Saturday
Some healthcare providers and community health programs now offer nutrition support and produce prescription programs designed to improve access to healthy foods.
Everyone deserves access to nourishing food and your zip code should not determine your health outcomes.
You Were Made for This
This Wellness Wednesday, remember this: you are not powerless when it comes to your health.
You don’t need perfection. You don’t need expensive wellness trends. You don’t need to change everything overnight.
What you need is information, support, consistency, and the belief that your daily choices matter.
Feed your body well. Move it with purpose. Rest it with intention. Surround yourself with people who encourage your growth and well-being. That is whole-person wellness, mind, body, and spirit.
