This week, the FDA made headlines by approving a lab-grown salmon for public consumption which is a first in U.S. history.
Naturally, our community has questions:
• Is it safe?
• Is it healthy?
• Is it better than wild salmon?
• Should we trust it?
These are real concerns, and you deserve real conversations about what we put into our bodies and how it affects our long-term wellness. Let’s open up the conversation together.

Breaking Down the Options:
Wild-Caught Salmon
Still considered the gold standard for nutrition.
• Higher omega-3 fatty acids
• Fewer contaminants
• Natural diet and clean environment
Farm-Raised Salmon
Widely available but depends heavily on farming practices.
Some farms are clean and others use antibiotics or feed practices that could change the nutritional value.
Lab-Grown Salmon (New FDA Approval)
This is the newest option on the market.
• Grown from real salmon cells in a controlled environment
• No mercury, no microplastics, no parasites
• But long-term health data is still limited
• And labeling varies depending on the state and restaurant
FDA Labeling Rules (Simple and Clear)
The FDA requires the following for cultivated seafood:
• The product’s name must be truthful and not misleading
• It must use a common or usual name, such as “cell-cultivated salmon”
• If it contains fish protein, it must still list fish allergens, even though it’s grown from cells
This means Wildtype (the company behind the product) cannot label or market their product as wild or farmed salmon.
Wildtype has labeled their items as:
• “Cell-cultivated salmon”
• “Cultivated salmon”
• “Wildtype salmon saku”
You will not see it simply labeled as “salmon.”
Some states require more specific labeling like “lab-grown,” while others have banned cultured foods entirely.
States With Restrictions or Bans on Cultivated Proteins
Some states have already banned or restricted the sale of cultivated meat and seafood:
• Florida, Alabama – full bans
• Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska – bans already in effect
• Texas – bans sale and distribution starting September 2025
California does NOT ban cultivated salmon, so you may begin seeing it at select restaurants over time.
How Restaurants Are Listing It
Restaurants currently serving Wildtype salmon (such as those in Portland) are labeling it clearly as:
• Wildtype cultivated salmon
• Cell-cultivated salmon
• Cultivated salmon saku
Again they are not allowed to simply call it “salmon” without clarification. The description must not mislead consumers.
EBLUXE CARES Consumer Tip Sheet: How to Identify Salmon in 2025
Use this tip sheet for yourself or share it with someone you love.
If you're not sure ask: “Is this wild-caught, farm-raised, or cell-cultivated?”
Look for words like:
• Wild-caught
• Farm-raised
• Cell-cultivated
• Cultivated salmon
• Cell-cultured salmon
If dining out, ask your server:
• “Is your salmon wild, farmed, or cultivated?”
• “How is it labeled on the menu?”
Best option for clean eating: Wild-caught salmon remains the most natural and nutrient-dense choice in our opinion.

Thank you for such great information about salmon.
For my health benefits I always purchase wild catch. Simply being cautious of fish farming. This information is very informative and is good for those who are not aware of the foods they purchase.
Thank you
Thank you for always keeping us Informed. I’m not sure that I like the idea of lab grown salmon
I love the information you guys are providing. I’m going to stick with the wild salmon
